How fermentLab works
fermentLab is a logbook for your ferments: record recipes and amounts, follow every jar day by day and, if you like, share your successful recipes with the community. Here are the parts of the site.
My fermentations
The logbook collects all your fermentations, each with its own page.
- Choose the type (lacto-fermented vegetables, kombucha, jun, kefir, water kefir, yogurt, wild sodas…): the form adapts and works out the salt, the amounts per liter and the percentages for you.
- Each fermentation has a status (planned, in progress, completed, failed, archived) and can have a photo.
- In the list you can search by title or ingredient and filter by status.
The timeline
Every fermentation has a timeline: you note what happens, when it happens.
- pH and temperature measurements, notes, tastings with stars.
- Ingredient additions (for example the fruit of the second fermentation or the ginger bug feedings): they join the recipe with the stage and day you added them.
- Stage changes and completion, with a date and time you can adjust.
Reminders and notifications
Coming soonSo you don't forget the key steps of a fermentation.
- On each fermentation you'll be able to set a reminder with a day and time, for example "bottle it" or "move to the second fermentation".
- Reminders will be able to repeat (every day, every few hours…), handy for ginger bug feedings or burping bottles.
- You'll get them in the site's bell and by email; when a fermentation is completed, its reminders are paused.
Ingredients and amounts
- As you type a name, suggestions from the catalog appear, in Italian and English. If an ingredient isn't there, just type it: it stays as a free-text ingredient.
- Amounts can be in grams, sachets, teaspoons or pieces, fractions too ("1/2").
- In your profile you choose the units: grams, milliliters and °C, or ounces and °F.
Labels and printing
- For each fermentation you can print a label for the jar, with the dates, the main ingredients and a QR code that leads back to its page.
- A completed fermentation can also be printed as a recipe, with ingredients and a day-by-day procedure.
Community recipes
- A completed fermentation can be shared as a recipe: a copy is published, with your notes and photo only if you choose to include them.
- You decide who sees it: only the community (members) or everyone.
- You can search recipes by text, type and ingredients, save them to favorites and use them as a starting point: they become a "planned" fermentation of yours, with the procedure as a guide.
Account and profile
- To use the logbook you need a free account, with a confirmed email.
- In your profile you change name, photo, password and units; language and light/dark theme are chosen from the header.
- You can delete your account at any time from your profile.
Use it like an app
- Android (Chrome): when the "Install fermentLab" prompt appears tap Install, or choose "Install app" from the ⋮ menu.
- iPhone (Safari): tap Share and then "Add to Home Screen".
- Once installed, fermentLab opens full screen from the icon on your phone.
Privacy and contact
- Your fermentations are private: only you can see them, unless you share a recipe.
- Site statistics turn on only if you accept them in the cookie banner; you can change your mind from "Cookie preferences".
- For questions or reports there is the Contact page.
